ChallengesThe challenges on the UMass Dartmouth campus mirror those of the wider community as we move toward sustainability. How do we take infrastructure created when energy was not an issue and retrofit it with conservation in mind? How do we model a systems approach to dealing with issues of resource and waste? |

CoursesOur sustainability classes afford students the opportunity to participate in real-word applications including assessments of our campus and local communities. ProgramsSustainability is woven throughout UMD's curriculum. Students can engage in various ways, including the sustainability minor and certificate programs. Many departments, including Mechanical Engineering, Policy Studies, and the MBA program, have environmental/sustainability tracks or certificates in place or in the works. |
Sustainability involves the reinvention of the world as we know it: new processes for business and industry, new methods of treating wastewater, and new ways of partnering across disciplines. University research is at the forefront of this revolution-- from materials crafted through biomimicry through ocean chemistry, climate science, and estuaries, to work on sustainability indices and new methods of governance. Many of these involve students and multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional research.
