Canvas Outage Update

May 8, 2026

Access to the Canvas learning system has been restored.

As announced yesterday, exams and assignment due dates scheduled for today (Friday, May 8) and Saturday, May 9 have been postponed to ensure that students have adequate time to review course materials on Canvas.

Students in courses with exams or deadlines originally scheduled for May 8 and 9 will hear from instructors about when exams or deadlines will be rescheduled.

If you were scheduled to take an in-person final exam on Friday or Saturday that was postponed, we will be adhering to the following schedule:

  • Classes that meet MWF at 1:00 pm will have exams on Monday, May 11th from 6:30-9:30
  • Classes that meet TuTh at 11:00 am will have exams on Tuesday, May 12th from 6:30-9:30
  • Classes that meet MWF at 8:00 pm will have exams on Wednesday, May 13th from 6:30-9:30
  • Classes that were scheduled to have exams on Saturday, May 8th (classes starting on MW at 5:00 and TuTh at 5:00) will have final exams on Wednesday, May 13th from 3:00-6:00

Finals will be held in the room where the class regularly meets unless students are informed otherwise by their faculty member.

Please note this does not affect Law School finals.

UMass Dartmouth is monitoring a nationwide Canvas outage and cybersecurity incident involving Instructure, the company that operates the learning management system. According to Instructure, affected data may include student names, email addresses, student ID numbers, and user messages. The issue occurred within the vendor’s system, not UMass Dartmouth’s campus systems, and has since been contained.

Canvas remains offline while Instructure investigates the incident. Due to the disruption, final exams scheduled for Friday, May 8, and Saturday, May 9, 2026, along with assignments due May 7–9, have been postponed. Papers, assignments, and other academic work due on Thursday, May 7, Friday, and Saturday are also postponed. The Provost’s Office will provide additional guidance regarding end-of-semester work and finals.

CITS continues to monitor campus systems and advises all users to remain cautious about suspicious emails or links related to Canvas or Instructure, and to approve only multi-factor authentication requests they initiate. Please refer to the CITS Security website for more information on cybersecurity best practices.

Commencement ceremonies will proceed as scheduled.

Additional updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
