Eligible Members of the UMass Dartmouth Community
Active members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth community who qualify for UMassD phone numbers:
- Active UMass Dartmouth employees (faculty & staff)
Each employee can have exactly one UMassD phone number. The phone number is associated with a person, not a specific location.
The employee must have an active UMassD Logon account.
University Visitors
Courtesy UMassD phone numbers for non-employees, non-students are available to members of the campus community who are neither students nor university employees but are affiliated with the University in a formal capacity (e.g. contractors). The courtesy phone number must be requested by the UMass Dartmouth supervisor using the “Human Resources ID Request Form” and approved by the Associate Vice Chancellor for Information Technology.
Individuals not Eligible for UMassD phone numbers
- Applicants
- Students
- Alumni
- Retirees and former employees
- Family members, including surviving spouses
- People with no formal affiliation with UMass Dartmouth
UMassD Phone Number Usage
University phone numbers must only be used for UMassD business. Private calls are not permitted.
Calling Plans
By default, all UMassD phone numbers can dial US domestic numbers. International calling must be requested and approved by the department head (Director, Dean, Vice Chancellor / Provost).
All employees are encouraged to use MS Teams, Zoom, or other secure audio/video conferencing tools for international communication needs.
UMassD Phone Number Termination and Reassignment
UMassD phone numbers are removed from the person’s Microsoft account immediately at the time of separation (e.g. retirement, contract end date, termination).
UMassD phone numbers that are removed from a person’s account are reserved for 12 months from the date of removal unless the department head (Director, Dean, Vice Chancellor / Provost) requests reassignment to a new employee for business continuity. Stored voice messages, greetings, and other configuration settings are not retained.
UMassD Phone Number Reinstatement
If a person returns to active University employment within 12 months after separation (e.g., part-time lecturers) and the number has not been reassigned, they will retain their previously assigned number. Otherwise, a different available number will be assigned.
UMassD Directory Listings
The UMassD phone number is displayed in the Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Teams contact tile of an employee, which is visible to other members of the UMassD campus community who have an active UMassD Logon account.
All active employees are listed in the public University web directory. At the discretion of the Dean or Vice Chancellor/Provost, in accordance with University standards, the publicly listed number may be a main department or office number rather than an individually assigned UMassD phone number. It is the department head’s responsibility to keep the public University web directory listings of their department, college, or division up to date.
UMassD Phone Devices
All employees are expected to use the Microsoft Teams app for their UMassD phone number. Microsoft Teams desktop phones are available for phone numbers that are not associated with a person (e.g., a front-desk staffed by students).
Emergency phones are installed where required by regulations and configured to dial Campus Police directly.
