Routers

The university does not allow routers (wired or wireless) on the residential network.

At the moment, students are not limited to the number of computers they can have connected to the network. To allow multiple computers to connect to the network at the same time, students may use a network switch. A network switch allows multiple computers to connect to the Internet while requiring each computer to be registered by an individual with an active UMassD logon.

Routers, both wired and wireless, are similar to switches; however, they allow computers to access the Internet without having to register themselves. The owner of the router is held responsible for any incident resulting from a computer connected through his/her router, even if he/she does not own the computer involved in the incident.
