This course introduces finite element method (FEM) simulation and its application to additive manufacturing (AM) for quality/reliability improvement. Topics to be covered are: Introduction to the fundamentals of FEM; Hands-on experience with FEM software and practical aspects of solids, heat transfer, and nonlinear problems; Review of AM processes and quality/reliability issues; FEM simulation to predict part distortions, residual stresses, and in-service performance of AM part; Simulation-based optimization of AM process parameters for quality improvement.
