You can have your child contact their guidance office. Feel free to contact us and we can mail you one at 508-999-8713. We currently serve the following UB Target schools: New Bedford High School, Global Learning Charter school, Wareham High School, Greater New Bedford Vocational-Tech.
Who May Apply to Upward Bound?
Students in their second semester of their 8th grade year as well as students in 9th and 10th grades who attend UB target schools, are in good academic standing and are seriously considering attending college may apply to the program if they and their parents or guardians meet federal income and educational guidelines. (Two-thirds of our students must meet both criteria; one-third may meet one or the other but not both). To be educationally eligible, the parent(s) with whom the student lives cannot have a degree from a four-year college. While the income information for our next recruitment period will be updated before our next recruitment period, the most recent income guidelines are below:
Maximum Family Income* in Jan 31, 2017 for Upward Bound Eligibility
|Size of Family **||48 Contiguous States, D.C., and Outlying Jurisdictions||Alaska||Hawaii|
For family units with more than eight members, add the following amount for each additional family member: $5,730 for the 48 contiguous states, the Distric of Columbia and outlying jurisdictions; $7,170 for Alaska and $6,585 for Hawaii.
The term "low-income individual" means an individual whose family's taxable income for the preceding year did not exceed 150 percent of the poverty level amount.
The figures shown under family income represent amounts equal to 150 percent of the family income levels established by the Census Bureau for determining poverty status. The poverty guidelines were published by the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services in the Federal Register, Vol. 76, No. 13, January 20, 2011, pp. 3637-3638.
When and how should I apply?
Recruiting takes place throughout the Academic School Year. See your guidance counselor for a pass to attend the Upward Bound informational session in your school. Teachers, guidance counselors, parents, and community members can also refer students to Upward Bound.
Once we've determined that you are eligible to apply (refer to UB Student Application above), you will need to complete an application and get a teacher recommendation. Strong candidates will be interviewed by two Upward Bound representatives in the Upward Bound Office. Students are notified within two to three weeks from the date of interview as to whether or not they have been accepted into the program.
