Convocation
The beginning of the academic year
Convocation marks the official beginning of the academic year at UMass Dartmouth. Taking its name from the Latin convocare (“to call together”), Convocation is your first opportunity to gather together as part of UMass Dartmouth’s academic community.
The 2025 Convocation will be held on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at 10:45 a.m. in the amphitheater.
Get ready to be a Corsair! Bond with classmates as you begin this important part of your life.
The scholarly circle of life
Convocation recognizes the scholarly circle of life—the beginning of a journey that will culminate in your Commencement.
The ceremony begins with an academic procession of faculty and staff, garbed in the traditional (and often colorful) regalia of the schools where they earned their highest degrees. Then, you’ll hear from various members of the campus community, including administrators, who will extend an official welcome from the university.
The Convocation ceremony is a time to:
- reflect on our shared values
- get advice on how to be successful at UMassD
- consider the importance of your educational work
- recognize the university’s commitment to support you as you pursue your education
The opportunity to connect with the Corsair Community
After the Convocation Ceremony, join us for a campus-wide picnic on the quad between 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., marking the official beginning of another academic year! All staff, faculty, and students are welcome to attend. Enjoy delicious barbecue, mingle with your campus friends, take home giveaway items, and catch some live entertainment.
