Training & Education

The Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (ODEI) offers the following catalog of in-person educational programs to students, faculty and staff that address issues related to discrimination and harassment prevention, Title IX and sexual misconduct, and unconscious bias.

Title IX & Sexual Misconduct

Course description: This education module will provide the participant with a comprehensive overview of Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 (Title IX), its evolution over the past 50+ years, and the statute’s application to and impact on institutions of higher education.  The course will review the most significant changes to the statute following the most recent passage of the 2020 “Final Rule” under the Trump Administration.  

Participants will be provided with an overview of the following topics, including the

  • role of the Title IX Coordinator and Investigator
  • distinction between an “incident report” and a “formal complaint”
  • available supportive measures
  • review of the University’s Title IX Grievance Procedure and Sexual Misconduct Grievance Procedure and the differences between the two protocols
  • informal resolution process
  • mechanics of the investigation and live hearing
  • appeal process
  • respective roles and obligations of a “confidential resource” and “mandated reporter”, and
  • available mechanisms to report violations of Title IX.

Course duration: 75 minutes

Discrimination & Harassment Prevention

Course description: The objective of this education module is to help the participant to:

  • understand UMass Dartmouth’s Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Program and applicable policies related to discrimination and harassment prevention
  • understand and identify acceptable and unacceptable behavior or conduct in the workplace or classroom/academic setting
  • understand and identify behavior or acts that constitute discrimination, harassment, and/or retaliation based on protected class status
  • identify the available internal and external mechanisms available to report acts of discrimination, harassment and retaliation
  • understand the responsibilities as a UMass Dartmouth community member to create and maintain a harassment-free living, learning, and working environment

Course duration:  60 minutes

Unconscious Bias - What You See is Not Always What You Get

Course description:  The objective of this education module is to help the participant to:

  • Understand the inherent and insidious nature of unconscious bias and the importance of addressing it within the workplace
  • Explore personal, cultural, and organizational barriers to addressing and intervening during moments of bias
  • Develop individual and institutional strategies reduce bias in order to improve the workplace culture and campus environment for everyone

Course duration: 60 minutes

Online Training Opportunities

The UMass system campuses, including UMass Dartmouth, have engaged “Get Inclusive” to administer its online training modules, including sessions related to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) for faculty and staff.  The DEI training modules offered through “Get Inclusive” include:

  • Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in the Workplace

  • DEI Inclusive Hiring
