First-Generation Students
What does it mean to be a first-generation (or first-gen) student?
A first-generation college student is the first in their family to attend a four-year college or university—typically meaning parents or guardians have not earned a U.S. bachelor’s degree.
At UMass Dartmouth, first-gen students aren’t the exception—they’re the majority. We're proud that more than half of our undergraduates (56%) identify as first generation.
First-gen Corsairs bring diverse backgrounds, resilience, and ambition, along with a drive to create new opportunities for themselves and their families. We also recognize that they may face unique challenges, such as navigating college systems, understanding financial aid, or balancing academics with family responsibilities. That’s why UMassD is committed to providing the resources and support needed for them to thrive.
