Salt marshes are valuable biogeomorphic components of the coastal zone, providing habitat, storm protection, and carbon sequestration. Because of these ecosystem services, large investments in marsh restoration are happening on the local, regional, and global level. Though the persistence of vegetative communities largely depends on salinity and elevation, the long-term trajectory of salt marshes is controlled by the interaction between sea-level rise and sediment budgets. Here we demonstrate how process-based sediment transport measurements, geospatial analysis, and simple decision frameworks can inform salt marsh restoration.
