Topic: DESIGN AND EVALUATION OF A TOROIDAL ELECTROACOUSTIC TRANSDUCER
Abstract: The design, modeling, fabrication and testing of a piezoelectric toroidal transducer is presented for underwater acoustics. Solid toroidal geometries are common shapes for engineering applications including transformers, but hollow piezoelectric shells have not previously been demonstrated as an actual acoustic source. In prior work, a closed-form analytical model of the radiation from a solid toroid was published with the primary purpose as a useful approximation for the acoustic radiation of a very short cylinder. Subsequently, coaxially aligned toroids served as approximations of finite length cylinders. The thesis objective of this research was to analyze the vibration of an actual hollow piezoelectric toroid vibrating in its circumferential hoop-mode and separately in its breathing tube-mode and present the governing equations for its resonance frequency and equivalent electromechanical parameters. The energy method allows the electrical, piezoelectric, mechanical, and radiation parts of the problem to be solved separately, then synthesized as an equivalent electromechnical circuit. Calculations are compared with a first segmented toroidal prototype made from piezoelectric ceramics cylindrical tube sections. The acoustical radiation (directional factor patterns) and resonance frequencies were compared with analytical results and showed promising results.
