At UMass Dartmouth, his work on statistical pattern recognition was supported by AFOSR from 1971-77, and the work on statistical image processing was funded by ONR from 1979-82. He also received research support from NASA, Army Materials Technology Laboratory, Army Research Office, NUSC at Newport and New London, Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station, National Research Council, Transportation Research Board, as well as Analog Devices and Inspex. His current research interests include pattern recognition, image processing, neural networks, AI expert systems, time series analysis, with applications to geophysical , radar and underwater acoustics as well as industrial and medical ultrasound problems.
Dr. Chen was the Editor in Chief of Computer Engineering Series from McGraw-Hill Inc. Professional Publishing group. He has published 28 books including Fuzzy Logic and Neural Network Handbook which he edited and was published by McGraw-Hill publication in Jan. 1995. Dr. Chen has published 500 journal and conference papers and technical reports. He was an Associate Editor for IEEE Trans. on Geoscience and Remote Sensing 1985-2000, Associate Editor of International Journal on Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence since 1986.
Dr. Chen is a Life Fellow (2003) of the IEEE, Fellow (1988) of the IEEE, Fellow (1996) of the International Association of Pattern Recognition (IAPR), a member of ASEE, PRS, ASNT, INNS, AAAI, and SEG. He was on the Administrative Committee of IEEE SMC Society, and Chairman of ten IEEE sponsored workshops and symposiums. He served as director of NATO Advanced Study Institute and Advanced Research Workshop in 1978, 1982 and 1987. He was the principal investigator of two NATO Collaborative Research (With Polish Academy of Science) grants on pattern recognition and neural networks, 1994-1996, 2001-2002. He served as a director of Bay State Skills Corp. sponsored special institutes 1984 to 1989. Dr. Chen has served on the ONR and DoD Graduate Fellowship Review Panels 1989-1994, 2000-. Dr. Chen has been a consultant to AVCO, AS& E, ENDECCO Battelle Switzerland, O’Conner Research, U.S. Windpower, Inspex, AFGL, Metroplitan Machine Co., Prometheus, and Morningside, N.A. and Biscom. He has also consulted extensively with Air Force Geophysics Lab and Naval Underwater Systems. From 1988-1991, he consulted with Army Material Technology Lab on signal processing based high resolution ultrasonic nondestructive testing of materials. From 1994-1995 he consulted with Army Missile Command on the use of wavelet transforms in radar target identification. Currently he is collaborating with Brigham and Women’s Hospital Cardiovascular Division on automatic segmentation of intravascular ultrasound images.
Under Dr. Chen’s supervision, 78 graduate students have completed master’s thesis/project since 1975, and ten Ph.D. students received their degrees as of May 2008. Currently, he supervises three Master degree students in their project work. Dr. Chen is in charge of the Ultrasonic Signal Processing Laboratory and Machine Vision Laboratory of the ECE Department. The Machine Vision Lab. has recently completed a project with Inspex on semiconductor wafer inspection. Dr. Chen is also director of the Ultrasonic NDE Laboratory at the university’s Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Center (ATMC). The Ultrasonic NDE Lab. houses a Panametircs LSC Series Ultrasonic Scanning System.
