Highly acclaimed journalist to speak at 2008 Commencement
Ray Suarez, the senior correspondent for The NewsHour, who has spent more than a quarter century in journalism covering local, national, and international stories, will address UMass Dartmouth's 2008 undergraduate commencement exercises.
Due to the rapid enrollment growth of the campus undergraduate and graduate students will be receiving their degrees at different ceremonies for the first time. Approximately 350 graduate students will receive their degrees on Saturday, May 24 and 1,200 undergraduates will receive degrees on Sunday, May 25.
Honorary degrees will be granted to New Bedford native and Qualcomm founder Irwin Jacobs and wife Joan Jacobs, Southcoast Hospitals Group CEO Ronald Goodspeed and retired Dean of Students Donald Howard. the Graduate Commencement will feature innovators from the campus and beyond. More
Rockland Trust donates $50K for Library Cyber Cafe
Rockland Trust has donated $50,000 to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, it was announced today. The donation will sponsor the creation of the Rockland Trust Cyber Café in the expanded Claire T. Carney Library on campus.
The Claire T. Carney Library project, slated to open in the Fall of 2010, will contain, in addition to the library collections of books, periodicals and other information, a lecture venue for guests speakers and University receptions, a campus gallery and the Rockland Trust Cyber Café--a technology equipped campus meeting spot. The expanded library space will benefit not only the University's student population but the greater Dartmouth-SouthCoast community as well. More
Campus launches myAlert emergency message system
UMass Dartmouth has launched myAlert, a new emergency notification system that will instantly transmit a text or voice message to the cell phones of students, faculty and staff in the event of a major emergency. The campus has begun an aggressive campaign to encourage students, faculty and staff to sign up for myAlert via a secure web site at www.umassd.edu/myalert.
"Our myAlert system will allow us to deliver the fast, clear, and accurate information that is critical when a crisis occurs," UMass Dartmouth Public Safety Director Emil Fioravanti said. "We now need students, faculty and staff to do their part by registering with myAlert."
