UMass Dartmouth’s Faculty Federation presents awards
The Faculty Federation at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth honored four individuals for exemplary service during a recent awards banquet in the Campus Center.
Named Scholar of the Year was Phillip Melanson, chancellor professor of political science. The award recognizes Melanson’s substantive body of scholarship works accessible to national and international audiences in the field of political violence such as assassinations, terrorism and government secrecy. He is the author of more than a dozen books and has been featured as an expert commentator on nearly 300 radio programs and television shows including ABC’s Prime Time Live, CBS Evening News, the History Channel, and CNN.Melanson, a Marion resident, has taught at UMD since 1971 and received his BA, MA and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Connecticut.
Timothy C.K. Su, chancellor professor of chemistry/biochemistry since 1975, received the Teacher of the Year Award. Su, a Westport resident, earned his bachelor’s degree at Hope College and a Ph.D. from Wayne State University. His specialty areas include physical chemistry, ion-molecule reactions, and mass spectrometry. Su has been published in numerous American Chemical Society journals.
Also named Teacher of the Year was Paul Donnelly, professor of psychology at UMD since 1979. Donnelly, a Somerset resident, received his BA from Providence College, his MA from Assumption College, and Ed.D. from Boston University. His fields of interest include counseling psychology and treatment of adolescent and criminal offenders.
Eileen S. Caron, information systems manager/financials, was the recipient of the Educational Services Unit (ESU) Performance of Service Award. A Marion resident, Caron has worked at the university for 22 years and received a master’s degree in business administration from UMass Dartmouth.
Grace Fey, chairperson of the Board of Trustees, was the event’s guest speaker. William Giblin, Board of Trustees vice chairperson, was also a special guest.
