Eisteddfod, fireworks, among public events during UMass Dartmouth's 2001 Homecoming Weekend

A reunion of Eisteddfod Festival performers and friends as well as a re-scheduled Community Appreciation Day will be highlights at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Alumni Association's Homecoming Weekend, October 19-21.

Eisteddfod, fireworks, among public events during UMass Dartmouth’s 2001 Homecoming Weekend October 19-21

A reunion of Eisteddfod Festival performers and friends as well as a re-scheduled Community Appreciation Day will be highlights at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Alumni Association’s Homecoming Weekend, October 19-21. This year’s theme, Navigating your way back to UMD, encourages the general public, as well as university alumni, faculty, staff, and students, to return and enjoy an array of activities designed to appeal to diverse interests. 

The weekend marks a reunion for the Eisteddfod, a showcase for folk musicians and artisans. A series of concerts and workshops will be offered throughout the weekend. For more information, contact Mat Despres at (508) 999-8010. 

Community Appreciation Day, postponed from September 23, starts at 4 p.m. on October 20 in the campus quadrangle and culminates with a dazzling fireworks display at 7 p.m. Music, face painting, moonwalks, a rock climbing wall, a Velcro wall and various vendors will be features. Blues Alley Swing Band Thang, a local band, will perform. Fleet Bank, the Town of Dartmouth, and the UMass Dartmouth Foundation are sponsors. 

In addition to numerous reunions and athletic events, Homecoming Weekend activities include the Fifth Annual Homecoming Parade and Bonfire on Friday, October 19 from 5-8 p.m, stepping off at Centennial Way and proceeding around Ring Road. 

The UMass Theatre Company’s production of To Kill a Mockingbird, runs at 8 p.m. in the main auditorium with additional performances on Saturday, October 20 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sunday, October 21 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. For reservations, call 508-999-8133 or 508-999-8167. 

Two seminars will be offered on Saturday, October 20. Investing in Stocks and Mutual Funds, led by Ray Barrows, from 9 a.m.-Noon in the Board of Trustees room, Foster Administration Building, third floor. Trey Whelley ’89 will lead The Tax Law and You, in the Campus Center, room 007 from 10-11 a.m. 

On Sunday, October 21, the First Annual Nancy L. Schonheinz Memorial 5K Road Race on Ring Road starts at 10 a.m. with registration in parking lot 7. For more information, contact Stephanie at 508-910-3410 or stl.ush7356@slh.org. 

The library’s free open house from 12-2 p.m. will provide viewing of special 1951 memorabilia.
