Prof. Ellen Christian receives Yvonne Sandstroem award

Professor Ellen Christian, chairperson of the Department of Adult & Child Nursing at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, is the recipient of the Yvonne Sandstroem Service Award. She was presented the award at a recent Faculty Senate meeting.

Dr. Phyllis Currier and colleagues in the College of Nursing nominated Christian for the award. It is presented in memory of the late professor of English, Yvonne Sandstroem, who served as the university’s first sexual harassment officer and was highly regarded by her colleagues for her passion for equality, social justice, and service to others.

Currier spoke about Christian’s record of strong commitment to students in the areas of advising, teaching and learning enhancement, and curriculum development.

Since its inception in 1983, Christian has been a member of the University Advising Center, and last year, she was named to the Academic Advising Steering Committee. She recently initiated a project, piloted by the College of Business, College of Nursing, and Department of Psychology, to advise newly admitted students by e-mail.

Christian is also active on the Honors Committee, coordinating the annual Honors Convocation, now in its 17th year, and developing the College of Nursing’s Honors Program.

She was chosen to participate in the National Learning Communities’ first Learning Institute in Seattle, WA this summer as part of a small UMD team led by Provost Thomas Curry. The group’s mission is to enrich the common academic experience of both students and faculty.

Christian was involved in developing the early Teaching and Learning Research Center and in the evolution of the current center, leading a K-16 resource group. She is co-chairperson of the Strategic Planning Council’s Faculty Development Group. Since 1997, she has led the College in the present undergraduate curriculum revision through service on several committees. She represents UMD on the President’s Policies and Procedures Task Force on the Community Outreach Committee, and is the CON representative to the Massachusetts General Hospital/UMass Clinical Affiliation Planning Team.

“Her leadership has provided the College with direction, organizational continuity, and a working environment of stability and faculty support,” said Currier.

Christian is a Marion resident.
