2011 Civic Engagement Summit
The 2011 Civic Education Summit will be hosted by UMass Dartmouth on April 14, featuring Social Entrepreneur Alan Khazei, co-founder of City Year and author of Big Citizenship.
UMass Dartmouth has earned the highest federal recognition for commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement
UMass Dartmouth has been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service learning and civic engagement. This is the second year in a row that UMass Dartmouth has been named to the honor roll.
Center for Civic Engagement connects learning to service
At UMass Dartmouth, community service and civic engagement activity is coordinated by the Center for Civic Engagement which is housed in the School of Education, Public Policy and Civic Engagement. Matthew Roy, Assistant Provost and Director of the Center for Civic Engagement said, "The President's Honor Roll is the result of a culture of service which has inculcated the entire UMass Dartmouth campus. Our students understand that they should use their gifts to benefit the community."
Additional community impacts:
-- The September, 2008 establishment of a new School of Education, Public Policy, and Civic Engagement designed to mobilize and coordinate university teaching and research assets to address significant education and social challenges in the region.
-- Inclusion of a goal that every student will have a service learning experience by 2012.
-- Location of the university's School for Marine Sciences and Technology and Star Store Arts Campus in the city of New Bedford; and location of the university's Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Center, a continuing education center, and a future Bio-Manufacturing Center in the city of Fall River.
-- Convening of the SouthCoast Development Partnership and SouthCoast Education Compact to mobilize the academic, business and government sectors to approach challenges and opportunities in a regional manner.
-- An active America Reads program that results in UMass Dartmouth students providing thousands of hours of reading assistance and other service to inner city children.
