AHA! Night: Marquetry Demonstration with Rob Millard-Mendez

Thursday, March 12, 2026 at 5:00pm to 7:00pm

Join us for a free artist demonstration at New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park (33 William Street) by Rob Millard-Mendez. During this special AHA! Night event, the artist will demonstrate marquetry: the intricate process of assembling thin sheets of wood veneer to create elaborate decorative patterns and imagery.

The demonstration takes place within Millard-Mendez’s current exhibition, An Imperfect Circle. The title reflects the artist’s return to the South Coast after two decades of artistic evolution. A UMass Dartmouth sculpture alumnus, Millard-Mendez has spent the last 20 years refining his craft and serving as a mentor to the next generation of creators. His work is known for utilizing materials ranging from various types of wood and metal to vintage maps in precise, creative and whimsical ways.

About the Artist: Rob Millard-Mendez is an Associate Teaching Professor in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at UMass Dartmouth, specializing in Foundations, Furniture Design, and Sculpture. His work has been featured in over 500 exhibitions and recognized in prestigious publications such as American Craft and Sculpture magazine.
