Between Worlds: Expressions of Displacement in Global Cinema
Hippocrates: Diary of a French Doctor (dir. Thomas Lilti, 2014) is a contemporary French
drama that follows a young medical intern as he navigates the intense pressures of hospital
life. Faced with ethical dilemmas, rigid hierarchies, and the emotional demands of patient
care, he experiences both professional and psychological dislocation. The film incisively
portrays the tension between personal ideals and institutional realities, exposing the fragility
of vocation within an overburdened medical system.
The screening will be introduced by Prof. Stephanie O’Hara (Global Languages and Cultures; Women’s and Gender Studies) and is presented by Global Languages and Cultures; Portuguese and the Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture; History; Art History; and the Language Resource Center.
