Abstract:

Understanding the ecological and evolutionary processes that shape biodiversity is increasingly urgent as environments change at unprecedented rates. This talk examines how genetic diversity at the genomic, population, and species level underpins adaptation and speciation — the process by which new species arise. As climate change accelerates, a population's ability to persist will depend on its genetic makeup and capacity to respond rapidly to new environmental pressures. Drawing on three interconnected research themes — genetic connectivity in marine fishes, genomic signatures of speciation and hybridization, and the evolutionary consequences of climate-driven range expansions — we explore the mechanisms that generate and maintain biodiversity in marine systems, and what they reveal about the resilience of marine life in a changing ocean.
