Three musical groups at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth will present free concerts next month.
The UMD Arkestra Large Jazz Ensemble will perform works by Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson, Wei-han Ho, and others in the African American jazz tradition on Monday, May 6, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will take place in the College of Visual and Performing Arts Recital Hall, room 153, with parking in lot 8/9.
On Wednesday, May 8, at 7:30 p.m., the UMD Creative Arts Jazz Ensemble will take the CVPA Recital Hall stage to play Middle Eastern time cycles, West and North African rhythms, and contemporary experimental music. Works by Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Juan Tizol are among those to be featured.
On Thursday, May 9, at 7 p.m., the UMD Kekeli African Drum and Dance Ensemble will perform outside the Star Store campus building, Union and Purchase Streets, New Bedford. The concert will include traditional recreational, ceremonial, processional, warrior, harvest, and social music of the Asante, Ga, Dagarti, Eve, Ibo, Yoruba, and Fon peoples of West Africa. Directed by master artist Kwabena Boateng, the performance will feature guest artists Kobena Adzenyah and Helen Mensah. Rain location will be Gallery X, 169 William Street, New Bedford.
