Campus Community Accomplishments
The Center for Women, Gender & Sexuality is celebrating the 30th annual campus Women's History Month. Throughout March, students, faculty, and staff from across campus will host events to highlight women's experiences and contributions.
Associate Professor Elena Peteva (Art) presents her solo exhibition, Material and Immaterial, at the Bannister Gallery at Rhode Island College, from February 19 through March 20. A reception will take place on Thursday, March 19, from 4 to 7 p.m., with an artist talk at 5 p.m.
SMAST Dean Kevin D. E. Stokesbury received $ 319,565 from the MA Division of Marine Fisheries for "FY26 Gulf of Maine Video Trawl Survey." The project will analyze trawling footage and estimate the abundance, spatial distribution, size structure, and length-weight relationship of Gulf of Maine cod spawning aggregations.
Commonwealth Professor Changsheng Chen (Fisheries Oceanography) received $91,305 from the MA Division of Marine Fisheries for "FY26 Sewage Treatment Plant Outfall Modeling". The project will nest the sewage treatment plant outfall models in the Northeast Coastal Ocean Forecast System. These models aim to simulate the spatial and temporal distributions of wastewater treatment plant effluent in Massachusetts coastal waters.
Professor Steven Cadrin (Fisheries Oceanography) received $68,480 from the MA Division of Marine Fisheries for "FY26 Whelk Stock Assessment". The project will conduct stock assessments to enhance fisheries management and the existing stock assessment of commercially harvested whelk in Massachusetts state waters.
Professor Pingguo He (Fisheries Oceanography) received $265,984 from the MA Division of Marine Fisheries for "Noval Fish Potting with Lights for Black Seabass and Scup: Developing Innovative Fishing Gear for Safe and Efficient Operation in Offshore Wind Farm Areas". The project will evaluate the efficacy of several fish pot designs, with the assistance of artificial light, to safely and efficiently harvest several southern New England fish species in offshore wind farm areas.
Associate Professor Marta Del Pozo Ortea (Global Languages and Cultures) was awarded a scholarship from the Matanel Sefarad Institute in Barcelona for their June 2026 program dedicated to the study of Sephardic Spain.
Nicholas Jones ('18, Mechanical Engineering) was selected as the 2026 recipient of the prestigious Rhode Island Manufacturers Association (RIMA) Manufacturing Innovation Award for propelling the industry forward. Jones worked in Professor Vijay Chalivendra's (Mechanical Engineering) lab as an Undergraduate Research Assistant.
