A sunny day at the Country Club of New Bedford brings alumni and friends together in support of scholarships for UMass Dartmouth students

UMass Golf Tournament

More than 140 golfers, friends, alumni, and supporters gathered for a day of golf at the inaugural Chancellor’s Cup, supported by platinum sponsors Eversource and Choate, Hall and Stewart, LLP, on Monday, June 6 at the Country Club of New Bedford. The event raised more than $70,000 for scholarships for UMass Dartmouth students.

The event began with a welcome reception sponsored by Hybrid.co, giving golfers the opportunity to network before heading out on the course. Throughout the tournament, participants enjoyed on-course contests, refreshments, raffles, a silent auction, and plenty of fun—all in support of student scholarships. The winning foursome of Scott Cordeiro ’87, Arthur Georgantas, Zac Georgantas, and John Rolli earned the honor of having their names engraved on the new Chancellor’s Cup trophy.

Greeting golfers at the post-tournament dinner, Chancellor Mark A. Fuller, PhD, remarked on the momentum of the university, and the role supporters play in creating opportunities for students that result in successful career outcomes and impact throughout the region. “You can see, feel, and hear the momentum in this room. UMass Dartmouth makes an impact in the SouthCoast and in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.”

At UMass Dartmouth, scholarships help students turn ambition into achievement. Funds raised through the Chancellor’s Cup provide critical financial support that enables students to pursue a college education, complete their degrees, and launch careers in fields ranging from engineering to nursing. Graduates achieve a 95% employment or continuing education rate, and the university ranks second among public institutions in New England for social mobility, helping students build brighter futures for themselves, their families, and their communities.

Recent graduate Samuel Riley ’26 shared his inspiring, life-changing experience at UMass Dartmouth, which was made possible through the generosity of scholarship donors. With the support of scholarships, he enrolled through the College Now program and went on to become a campus leader, demonstrating the transformative impact of philanthropy on student success.

“Donors like you created stability where there used to be uncertainty,” he said. “Because of you, I was able to graduate as a first-generation student from a family of immigrants.”

Special guest comedian Jimmy Tingle ’77 ended the evening on a light note with his stand-up set delivered with a UMass Dartmouth twist. As he recalled memories from his time as a student, alumni in the room had a laugh remembering time spent at student gathering spots around campus.

The Chancellor’s Cup brought together alumni, friends, corporate partners, and supporters for a great day benefitting students. Whether participating as a sponsor, golfer, guest, volunteer, auction bidder, or raffle purchaser, attendees played an important role in making the event a success. Most importantly, their generosity will help provide scholarships that empower UMass Dartmouth students to overcome financial barriers, pursue their education, and build extraordinary futures.
