Share the Dream essay by Amy Ortiz
My name is Amy Ortiz, and I am from Middletown, New York. I come from a small but close family that has gone through a lot of change in the past few years. After losing my mom to cancer, I moved in with my brother and his wife, who have supported me and encouraged me to continue my education. My family’s experiences have shaped me into someone who values care, responsibility, and resilience. They have shown me the importance of staying strong during hard times and inspired me to pursue a path that allows me to help others. I chose to come to UMass Dartmouth because finically it supported me the best. I am grateful to have found a University that fit all my needs and wants. Even though I am still trying to figure out the best career for me I am currently interested in nursing, teaching, or possibly becoming a veterinary technician. All of these fields connect to my desire to care for others, from people to student to students to animals I want to make a positive impact no matter the circumstances. My main focus as a student is to work hard, stay organized, and take advantage of every opportunity that helps me learn and grow. In the future I would love to use my education in positive and meaningful ways. If I pursue nursing, I want to provide care and comfort to patients the way I wish my mother had received during her illness, If I choose teaching, I want to inspire younger generations to never give up, and If I choose to become a veterinary technician I will put my all into helping animals and supporting the families that love them. No matter the path I take the goal stays the same, help, care, learn and grow. I want to make an impact that honors my mother’s memory and shows my family that their love and sacrifices helped me build a better future.
