Share the Dream essay by Will Porter, Jr.
My name is William Porter and I am from Brockton, Massachusetts. Growing up as a kid wasn't always the easiest thing there were a lot of struggles and I grew up in a household where things weren't always the same. Everything taught me to be strong and not give up on myself. Football became a big part of my life and stayed me on track and disciplined. It gave me a platform on which to be inspired, work hard, and continue striving for something better.
I transferred to UMass Dartmouth because I desired a fresh start and a chance to make a better life for myself. I am pursuing a degree in Computer Science because it is an area I am really interested in and enjoy a challenge. I like creating things that can help and make life easier. I hope to learn as much as I can and take advantage of all the opportunities offered at the school.
Once I've graduated, I'd want to use my computer science degree to build a career that does something for others and gives me the stability I never had while growing up. I'll open my own software company and, in all the years that follow, pay forward my community by working as a mentor to kids who come from tough backgrounds such as mine. I'd want to show them that no matter what you start with, you can still make your own way and be successful
