Electrical and computer engineering students Christopher Brunette '24, '25 and James Bourgeois '24, '25 were recently awarded the prestigious Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).

The SMART Scholarship offers recipients full tuition funding, an annual stipend, summer internships, mentorship, and guaranteed employment. For every year of scholarship funding, recipients agree to work for one year with the DoD.

"Chris and James have both maintained a GPA of 4.0 throughout their time at UMassD and have been active in research projects with faculty. They are well-deserving of this prestigious award," said Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Chair and Professor Dayalan Kasilingam.

Brunette is an electrical and computer engineering dual-major, and Bourgeois is an electrical engineering major. Both Brunette and Bourgeois are in the accelerated BS/MS program and will begin their graduate studies at UMassD next fall.
