This year's program showcased cutting-edge research and partnerships between academia, industry, and the U.S. Navy to drive innovation and train the marine workforce.

On July 21 and 22, the UMass Dartmouth Marine UnderSea Technology (MUST) program held its annual technical review at the Marketplace on the university’s main campus. This event provided an opportunity for participants to gain insights into innovative marine research projects, explore potential collaborations with researchers and industry experts, and discuss future MUST program initiatives and partnerships.

This year’s review showcased 33 research projects across diverse focus areas, including acoustics & signal processing, communications, AI & MI, AI & ML, biofouling, biology, computational modeling, cybersecurity, energy, materials, ocean dynamics, and robotics & sensing.

During the two-day event, faculty and student researchers delivered presentations highlighting their work, complemented by poster sessions encouraging direct dialogue and detailed exploration of their work. Three student posters received awards based on research merits, achievements, and the presentation at the event.

Award Winners

First Place
First place went to student Kartik Gupta for their project “Advanced Computational Investigation of Nose Curvature and Surface Hydrophobicity Effects in Water Entry of Solid Objects,” advised by Professor Mehdi Raessi (Mechanical Engineering).

Second Place
Second place was awarded to three teams:

  • Student Debarshi Sarkar, along with Siddhant Kerhalkar and Bala Lakshmi Ven Patibandla, for “Sub-mesoscale and Mesoscale Interactions STudy (SubMIST),” advised by Professor Amit Tandon (Estuarine & Ocean Sciences).

  • Student Marybeth Hope Banda for “Durability and Performance of Flow Batteries for Applications in Marine & Undersea Technology,” advised by Professor Patrick Cappillino (Chemistry & Biochemistry).

  • Student Tej Sai Kakumanu for “Development of A Fully Coupled, Nonhydrostatic, Marine Infrastructure-resolving, Atmospheric and Ocean Model System,” advised by Professor Changsheng Chen (Estuarine & Ocean Sciences).

Third Place
Third place went to student Ryan Berry for his project “Knowledge Augmented Adaptive Learning of Evolving Models for Large Sensor Data Streams,” advised by Professor Donghui Yan (Mathematics).

Program Guests

Corporate, research, and academic partners, including representatives from the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC), Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), Purvis Systems, and others, attended the review to strengthen collaboration between UMass Dartmouth, the U.S. Navy, and the broader marine technology community.
