Description: The Mechanical Engineering Department is pleased to present a seminar by Dr. Farhad Azadivar, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at UMass Dartmouth.

"OPTIMAL POLICIES FOR RECYCLING PARTS FROM RETURNED PRODUCTS".

Companies allow more generous return policies for returning products as a strong component of their marketing strategy. In most cases returned products contain defective parts and cannot be resold as a new product. In many cases they are disposed or the good parts recovered from them are recycled in aftermarket products.

Due to recent attention paid to environmental and disposal issues, there are significant efforts made to move more toward recycling than disposal. This presentation will cover issues involved in determination of conditions at which recycling is sound economically and environmentally. A quantitative model is provided to incorporate production, marketing and environmental conditions to make a decision on whether or not recycling is justified. The model balances material cost, inventory holding cost, disposal cost, and aftermarket product discount to come up with an optimal decision.

All are welcome; light refreshments will be served.
