Meet Jasmine Guy

Award-winning actress and local native is raisin’ cane at the Zeiterion

If anyone can relate to the all-encompassing college student experience, it’s award-winning actress Jasmine Guy, who rose to fame for her laudatory performance as the southern belle Whitley Gilbert on A Different World (1987-1993), a comedy-sitcom focusing on the joys and pains of college life from freshman year to post graduation. This Friday, the Boston native returns to the area for a one-night performance in Raisin’ Cane: A Harlem Renaissance Odyssey.

Raisin’ Cane is a celebratory glimpse of New York’s Harlem Renaissance, the mecca of artistic expression among Black writers, singers, visual artists, and activists during the 1920s – 30s. The performance intertwines music, poetry, and dance to honor of some of the era’s most illustrious artists, including poet Langston Hughes, folklorist author Zora Neale Hurston, and NAACP founder W.E.B. DuBois.

The upcoming show takes at the Zeiterion Theatre in New Bedford on Friday, February 5, 2016 at 8:00 pm. “Each year, The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center brings over 50 world-class artists to New Bedford. This February, we are proud to present actress, singer and dancer Jasmine Guy, along with the Avery Sharpe Jazz Trio, in celebration of Black History Month and the artists of the Harlem Renaissance. In fact, her appearance is a homecoming because Jasmine’s family is from Acushnet. We’re happy to welcome her home and the Z’s stage!” says Rosemary Gill, Executive Director.

A shuttle will depart from the Frederick Douglass Unity House (FDUH) heading to the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center to witness actress Jasmine Guy on stage at 7:00 pm this Friday.

Students are eligible to receive complimentary tickets, which have been made possible by the New Bedford Historical Society. Seats are limited. Please sign-up in the Frederick Douglass Unity House.
