Campus mobilizes to support Haiti UPDATE
UMass Dartmouth students, faculty and staff are planning several events to build support for Haiti relief efforts and to support students affected by the earthquake.
With the spring semester due to begin Monday, plans are coming together rapidly for a variety of efforts to support UMass Dartmouth's Haitian student population and to contribute to the relief effort.
All events will include organized fund raising efforts with proceeds going go to Partners in Development (pidonline.org) and to support UMass Dartmouth students who are directly affected by the earthquake.
To date, the following events have been scheduled:
-- January 27, 6:30 p.m. Campus Center patio. Candlelight Vigil sponsored by the Black Student Union and Haitian-American Student Association.
-- January 28, at 11 a.m. - noon. Main Auditorium. "L'inyon Fe la Fos" (Unity Makes Strength), a celebration of Haitian culture and resolve. This event will be simulcast across campus on WUMD (89.3FM) radio and channel 77.
-- January 28, noon-1:30. Commuter Cafe. UMD Community Luncheon with Haitian foods.
-- January 28 through January 30. Welcome Back Week events sponsored by the Campus Activities Board.
-- January 29th, 8:30 a.m., Woodland Commons. MLK Breakfast, Haitian students will be special guests.
In addition, the university is planning a formal program to provide personal support to those students who lived through the earthquake, those who have family members still in Haiti, and those who lost loved ones in the disaster.
The events are being coordinated by the Office of Student Affairs.
