UMass Dartmouth Prof. Howard E. Michel Elected 2011 IEEE Vice President, Member and Geographic Activities
Term Includes a Position on the Board of Directors
Dr. Howard E. Michel, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth has been elected 2011 IEEE Vice President, Member and Geographic Activities (MGA). In this role, Michel will serve a one-year term as chair and chief member of the Member and Geographic Activities Board of IEEE, the world's largest technical professional association. Michel will advise and support MGA staff on all regional operations, membership development activities and new initiatives.
The Member and Geographic Activities Board is one of six that govern IEEE's major area of interest. Michel will work with other elected leaders from Educational Activities, Publication Services and Products, Standards, Technical Activities and IEEE-USA. All positions also have a seat on the IEEE Board of Directors.
Michel also will be responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the IEEE Member and Geographic Activities Board and will work with 10 IEEE Regional Directors and other volunteer leaders from around the world on a variety of high-impact projects.

I look forward to working on a variety of programs that address the needs of our vast membership -- from computer scientists in India to physicists from Hungry to nuclear engineers from Washington State," said Michel."IEEE membership includes a number of valuable networking and professional development opportunities, including continuing education programs that provide exposure to new technologies outside one's comfort zone. I want to empower our local volunteers to work with local members to deliver this value to each of our 400,000 members in over 160 countries."
Michel has been an active IEEE member for over 35 years and held a series of leadership positions within the organization. He previously served on the IEEE Board of Directors in 2008-09, held the position of director of IEEE Region 1 (Northeastern U.S.), and was a past member of the IEEE-USA Board of Directors and IEEE Member and Geographic Activities Board. Most recently he was chair of the IEEE public visibility committee. On the local level, he previously served as Providence Section Chair; Central New England Council Chair; Region 1 Northeast Area Chair; and Providence Section Program Chair, Educational Activates Chair, and Professional Activities Chair.
He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1994, having served as a pilot, satellite launch director, engineer and engineering manager. Other achievements include successfully launching seven satellites by directing launch-base test and integration involving booster, satellite, and range hardware; and developing Department of Defense engineering processes for mission-critical computer systems. Michel is currently a consultant for the U.S. Navy in the area of embedded instrumentation and architectures.
