CVPA Students, Alumni, and Faculty Earn National Recognition
CVPA students, alumni and faculty enjoyed an award-winning year in a variety of artistic endeavors this year.
UMass Dartmouth College of Visual and Performing Arts students, alumni and faculty enjoyed an award-winning year in a variety of artistic endeavors this year.
Martha Grover (MFA '08) received the Ceramics Monthly Emerging Artist 2010 People's Choice Award. She describes her works as seeking to "enhance the experience of interacting with functional objects. I work toward creating a sense of elegance for the user while in contact with each porcelain piece. Jodi Stevens, who received her Master's in Fine Arts this spring, was one of two winners of the Creative Promise Awards for Student Excellence from the Surface Design Association, a national organization devoted to increasing awareness, understanding, and appreciation of textiles in the art and design communities as well as in the general public. CVPA's jewelry/metals students excelled at the International Precious Metals Institute New England Design Competition this spring. Award winners included:
Sarah Arnold (BFA) - $2,500 Carol Tyler Memorial Award.
Avery Lucas (MFA) - $1,000 La Fazia Memorial Award.
Dha Mee Hahn (MFA) - $750 New England Chapter Award
Jessica Silva (Masters o Art Education) -- $250 Honorable Mention
Music Professor Royal Hartigan received a $9,690 fellowship from the Marion and Jasper Whiting Foundation to continue his research on traditional percussion and sound in the Philippines. Dr. Hartigan has studied and performed a wide spectrum of musics of Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas. Visit royalhart.com to experience his music.
Art History Professor Anna Dempsey has been awarded a prestigious National Endowment for the Humanities-Winterthur Fellowship to continue her research into design history and modern/contemporary art. Dr. Dempsey specific research interests include applying Benjamin's critical concepts and theories of place to contemporary museum design, graphic design, architecture, images of the city, and gender and border spaces in film.
