The UMass Dartmouth music department will present free concerts at UMass Dartmouth and at other local locations in the coming weeks. Choirs, vocalists, wind and jazz ensembles will perform holiday music and a variety of other selections.

On November 30 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. is the wind ensemble's fall concert in the UMass Dartmouth Main Auditorium, 285 Old Westport Road, North Dartmouth, MA. The program includes: Variations on a Korean Folk Song (John Barnes Chance), Second Suite in F for Military Band (Gustav Holst), and Trittico (Vaclav Nelhybel). Also on the program are selections for bass and woodwind choirs, a circus march, and a holiday favorite. Wind ensemble conductor, Tobias Monte, describes this fall's program as both exciting and challenging, especially Nelhybel's Trittico. The variety of selections means that there's something for everyone. 

On December 5 at 3 p.m. the UMass Dartmouth Chamber Choir will perform a holiday concert at the St. John Neuman Church, 157 Middleboro Road, East Freetown, MA.  Under the direction of Tianxu Zhou, this 20-member auditioned ensemble will present holiday favorites and a cappella music from the Renaissance period to the present. 

The UMass Dartmouth Choirs will present the Winter Concert on December 9 at the First Unitarian Church, 71 Eighth Street, New Bedford, MA during AHA! Night, and on December 10 at the UMass Dartmouth Main Auditorium. On both nights the choirs perform at 7:30 p.m. Featured is the 50-member University Chorus; the UMass Dartmouth Select Chamber Choir each directed by Tianxu Zhou; the UMass Dartmouth Gospel Choir directed by Wes Brown; and the student-led a capella ensemble Mental Note. In addition, the New Bedford Public Schools' fifth and sixth grade All-City Select Chorus will join the University Chorus. Selections include Hallelujah Chorus and other selections from Handel's Messiah, Lux Aurumque by Eric Whitacre, And I Love Her made famous by the Beatles as well as other Gospel and holiday favorites.   

On December 13 at 7:30 p.m., under the direction of Marcelle Gauvin, students from class voice will perform their end of semester concert featuring jazz standards, musical theater favorites, and contemporary commercial music. Students are accompanied by John Harrison. 

The UMass Dartmouth Jazz ensemble will perform in concert December 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall (Room 153) of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth College of Visual and Performing Arts, 285 Old Westport Road, North Dartmouth, MA. The Jazz Ensemble features music department student musicians. The program includes a variety of music including Cole Porter's Night and Day, Oliver Nelson's Stolen Moments, Wave by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Jeannine by Duke Pearson, among others. Director and UMass Dartmouth Music Department Chair Doug Owens said, "It is our pleasure to study a variety of jazz styles over the course of the year. We take pride in preserving the many traditions of jazz music while sharing our creativity and passion for jazz through collaboration and performance. Join us for an evening of great music." 

The UMass Dartmouth Opera Workshop and Singer's Repertoire Class will present an Evening of Art Songs and Opera Scenes December 15 at 7:30 p.m. in room 104 of the UMass Dartmouth College of Visual and Performing Arts. Directed by Dr. Anton Belov and accompanied by pianist Danny Padget, the program includes selections from Pergolesi's "La Serva Padrona," Mozart's "Cosi fan Tutte," "Le Nozze di Figaro," and "The Magic Flute." In addition, songs by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Schumann, Strauss and Berg will be performed.
