Advisory: UMass Dartmouth Commencement details

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth will celebrate its 113th Commencement on the weekend of May 11-12, 2013 with the graduation of nearly 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

The ceremonies will take place in the Vietnam Veterans Peace Memorial Amphitheater located next to the Claire T. Carney Library. In case of rain, the ceremonies will take place in a 7,000-seat tent adjacent to the Amphitheater. In case of lightning, the ceremonies will be moved to the Main Auditorium, with overflow seating and livestreaming in the Library's Grand Reading Room and Campus Center.

The graduate ceremony conferring 576 Masters, Juris Doctor, and Doctoral degrees will be held Saturday, May 11, starting at 2:30 p.m. and ending no later than 4:00 p.m. An outdoor reception will be held after the ceremony.

The undergraduate ceremony conferring 1369 Bachelors degrees will be held Sunday, May 12, starting at 10:15 a.m. and ending no later than 12:30 p.m. An outdoor reception will be held after the ceremony.

We require all members of the media interested in covering either ceremony to RSVP. Information should include names, cell numbers and emails for media, and which event they are interested in covering.

We strongly recommend that members of the media arrive absolutely no later than 1:30 p.m. on Saturday to cover the graduate ceremony and no later than 9:00 a.m. on Sunday to cover the undergraduate ceremony.

There are two parking areas reserved for media. Satellite trucks have a reserved area behind the CVPA building, accessible via Woodland Commons between Lots 10 and 11. All other media have reserved parking in Lot 13. Please see attached map and directions.

We ask all media to have press credentials prominently displayed at all times.

In light of recent events, the University has augmented its security procedures for Commencement. Media bringing bags into the Amphitheater will need to have their bags checked by dog teams whenever they enter.

Media will be allowed full access to campus, with the exceptions of the Amphitheater, backstage, and the residence halls. As always, we ask that the media continue to be respectful of students, their families, staff and faculty during the event.

Due to space constraints, limited seating in the Amphitheater has been reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. No TV camera setups will be allowed in the Amphitheater, but TV cameras are allowed (no tripods). We have reserved space in the well of the amphitheater, stage right, for b-roll shots of procession.

The University has contracted with EVC of Beverly, Mass. to film, livestream and auto-archive the Commencement ceremonies, which go live 15 minutes before the start of each ceremony. EVC has also generously offered to provide a pool feed in HD-SDI for interested media.

EVC has 6 onsite plug-ins; interested media should bring splitters to be guaranteed to have a feed. The throw for cable from satellite trucks is 800'; the throw for cable from reserved media seats in the Amphitheater to the EVC hookup backstage is 100'. There is also a multbox for interested media.
