Massachusetts Appeals Court to Hear Cases at UMass Law

The Massachusetts Appeals Court will sit in the UMass Law Moot Courtroom Thursday, November 14, from 9am to 12pm

The Massachusetts Appeals Court will sit in the University of Massachusetts Law School at Dartmouth (UMass Law) Moot Courtroom (333 Faunce Corner Road, North Dartmouth, MA 02747), Thursday, November 14, from 9am to 12pm.  This is part of an initiative developed by Massachusetts Appeals Court Chief Justice Phillip Rapoza to educate the community and expose students to the work of the Appeals Court.

"We are very fortunate that UMass Law has been selected as the site on the SouthCoast for the Appeals Court to sit," said UMass Law Dean Mary Lu Bilek. "Our mission to provide access to legal education for students goes beyond the traditional classroom environment. In our simulation courses, clinics, and field placements, we allow our students to do more than lean the law--they develop and apply the skills, values, and habits necessary to pursue justice."

As part of fulfilling that mission, the law school has a Moot Court Program. The program provides students with the opportunity to improve written and oral advocacy skills. Student teams research and prepare a legal brief and compete in oral arguments against other schools. Students have participated in moot court competitions at the national and international level, including the American Association for Justice's moot trial competition.

There will be welcoming remarks at 9am, and the Court is expected to start hearing cases at 9:30am.  The Court has invited some other groups, so seating will be limited and on a first-come, first-served basis. The cases the justice will hear overlap nicely with some of the concepts UMass Law students are learning in classes this semester.

UMass Law is the only public law school in Massachusetts and was established in 2010. It is conveniently located 30 miles from Providence, RI, and 60 miles from Boston, MA. UMass Law is committed to ensuring access to an affordable legal education for students who hope to pursue justice and serve others through the practice of law.
