Dr. Timothy D. Walker Named New Press Director for Tagus Press
UMass Dartmouth's Center for Portuguese Studies & Culture (CPSC) has announced Dr. Timothy D. Walker as the new Press Director for the center's publications program, Tagus Press. Following the creation of the position by the CPSC Executive Board in Spring 2013, an election was concluded in July, with Dr. Walker assuming the role at the beginning of September.
"We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Walker as the head of Tagus Press," said Joao Paraskeva, Director of the CPSC. "His background and vision are a perfect match with our goals for Tagus Press as we continue to build on the already established successes of the publications program."
Dr. Walker (B.A., Hiram College, 1986; M.A., Ph.D., Boston University, 2001) is an associate professor of history at UMass Dartmouth. In addition, he serves as Fulbright Program Advisor, a member of the graduate faculty of the Department of Portuguese and an affiliated faculty member of the Center for Indic Studies and Department of Women's and Gender Studies. Walker is also an Affiliated Researcher of the Centro de História de Além-Mar (CHAM) at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal. He also served as Associate Director of the CPSC from 2007 to 2009. From 1994 to 2003, he was a visiting professor at the Universidade Aberta in Lisbon.
"I look forward to designing a publishing program that is financially sound and transparent, but which strives to promote publishing works of scholarship within the academic disciplines represented by CPSC affiliated faculty," noted Dr. Walker. "In concert with the Tagus Press Editorial Board, the Managing Editor, Director Paraskeva, and the CPSC Executive Board, we will continue to foster new publishing opportunities, consistent with the highest academic and industry standards."
Walker is the recipient of a Fulbright dissertation fellowship to Portugal (1996-1997), a doctoral research fellowship from the Portuguese Camões Institute (1995-1996), and a NEH-funded American Institute for Indian Studies Professional Development Grant for post-doctoral work in India (2000-2002). Walker has also been named a fellow of the Portuguese Orient Foundation (Fundação Oriente), the Luso-American Development Foundation (2003 & 2008), and has held a Wellcome Trust Travel Grant to the Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine at University College, London (Spring 2003). Most recently he was awarded an NEH Fellowship for academic year 2012-2013.
Tagus Press consists of a faculty Press Director, elected by the Executive Board of the CPSC, and a Managing Editor. In June 2013, the Editorial Board of Tagus Press was established. The Editorial Board consists of five UMD faculty members, elected from within the Executive Board of the CPSC. The Press Director and Managing Editor are ex officio, non-voting members of the Editorial Board. The Editorial Board is responsible for the imprint of the press, and must give final approval to every book published. The Editorial Board sets financial priorities and develops the mission, projects, and directions of the press.
Mario Pereira has been Managing Editor of Tagus Press since 2011. He received his Ph.D. from Brown University and previously served on the editorial staff of The New York Review of Books. Pereira was an Arts and Sciences Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of History at the University of Pittsburgh.
