UMass Dartmouth PhD Student's Book Launch Event Takes Place June 5
Cecília Amaral Figueiredo's Book Details Portuguese writer Ary dos Santos & Salazar regime
Cecília Amaral Figueiredo, a UMass Dartmouth PhD candidate in Luso-Afro-Brazilian Studies and Culture, will present and sign her book "Ary dos Santos: A Voz da Resistência à Ditadura Salazarista" ("Ary dos Santos: The Voice of The Resistance To The Salazar Dictatorship"), Thursday, June 5, 2014, at 7:30 p.m., at the Inner Bay restaurant in New Bedford. The book launch event takes place in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Portuguese Carnation Revolution. The event is free and open to the public.
The book, the foundation of which is Ms. Figueiredo's Master's thesis, has been published in Portugal by the Chiado publishing company and has been requested by all book stores in Portugal and Brazil. The author has taken part in three book launch events in Portugal, including an event in Lisbon with Portuguese writer Rui Zink, who also wrote the preface of the book.
In "Ary dos Santos: A Voz da Resistência à Ditadura Salazarista", Ms. Figueiredo investigates the role played by the poetry of the Portuguese writer Ary dos Santos in giving voice to the feelings of thousands of Portuguese silenced and oppressed by the Salazar regime, which came to an end on April 25, 1974. At once intellectual and popular, Ary dos Santos' lyrical voice became a means by which the poet and his readers survived and resisted oppression.
Cecília Figueiredo is a PhD candidate in Luso-Afro-Brazilian Studies and Culture at UMass Dartmouth, where she is working on a dissertation project that analyzes the concept of crisis in 20th century Portuguese novel. She earned her bachelor's degree in 1995 along with her teacher certification in English, French and Portuguese from UMass Dartmouth. During her PhD preparation she completed a Master's in Portuguese studies. She has taught romance languages at the secondary and college levels in both the United States and Portugal. She was born in the town of Vide, Moimenta da Beira, Portugal. She resides in Aldeias, Gouveia.
