"Enigma" by UMass Dartmouth's Harvey Goldman and Jing Wang will be screened during May 2015 exhibition in Spain
UMass Dartmouth College of Visual & Performing Arts (CVPA) Professor Jing Wang and retired Professor Harvey Goldman have had their visual music collaboration "Enigma" accepted to MuVi4, an international exhibition of video and moving image on synesthesia and visual music. MuVi4 invites artists, musicians, designers and performers, also professors and university students, to submit proposals of kinetic works to be part of a public exhibition, with performances and discussions. The professors' collaboration will be screened at Teatro Martinez Montañéz, Alcalá la Real, Jaén, Spain, May 16-19, 2015.
The visual music piece was also accepted to the international video festival VIDEOMEDEJA that was held from October 31-November 2, 2014 in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Novi Sad, Serbia.
"The reverberation of image and sound create a diametric sense of both order and chaos. The struggle and tension between these vacillating degrees of complexity and the viewers ability to assimilate them are at the essence of the work," according to the artists' statement. "Enigma was inspired by the 'Enigma Machine', a device used in the twentieth century for enciphering and deciphering of secret messages."
The Enigma machine has garnered renewed attention with the release of the movie "The Imitation Game" a biopic of English mathematician Alan Turing, who helped crack the Enigma code during World War II.

Jing Wang, a composer and virtuoso erhu artist, was born in China. Ms. Wang has participated in numerous musical communities, as a composer and a performer of diverse styles of music. She has received the rare honor to become a Fellow at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Her compositions have been selected and presented in China, Spain, France, Italy, Turkey, Romania, Russia, Canada, and throughout the United States. They have also been recognized by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers and Electro-acoustic Miniatures International Contest, Spain. One of her compositions Weathered Edges of Time is selected for inclusion in the collection of French National Library. She was the winner of 2006 Pauline Oliveros Prize given by the International Alliance for Women in Music. As an active erhu performer, she has introduced the Chinese indigenous erhu into Western contemporary music scene with her wide array of compositions for chamber ensemble, avant-garde jazz improvisations and multicultural ensembles. She has also successfully performed erhu concertos with several symphony orchestras in the United States. Ms. Wang is currently an Assistant Professor of Music at UMass Dartmouth where she teaches electroacoustic music, composition, and music theory.
Harvey Goldman has created critically acclaimed work in the fields of ceramics, digital imaging, animation and music. He taught digital media in the Department of Design at the UMass Dartmouth, where he currently holds the position of Chancellor Professor of Design. His work has been exhibited widely throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. His animations have been screened throughout the world including, the Smithsonian's Hirshhon Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the White Box Museum, Beijing, China.
