Dr. Carlos Muñoz, Jr. to Offer Keynote Address at Annual Breakfast Recognizing Diversity, Democracy, and Dr. King's Legacy

UMass Dartmouth's 12th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast will take place Friday, February 28, 2014, at 8:30 a.m., at UMass Dartmouth's Woodland Commons. Dr. Carlos Muñoz, Jr., Professor Emeritus of the University of California, Berkeley, will offer the keynote address at this year's breakfast recognizing diversity, democracy, and Dr. King's legacy. 

UMass Dartmouth Political Science major and Student Government Association President Marven Hyppolite ('14) and member of the United Latino Society, student Ayla Sanchez will serve as Masters of Ceremonies for the breakfast. Endeavor Scholar and College of Arts & Sciences major Rhesa Cumberbatch ('16) will deliver Dr. King's immortal "I Have a Dream" speech. A singing performance will be done by UMass Dartmouth student Ashley Harton-Powell. UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Divina Grossman will also offer welcome remarks and introduce Dr. Muñoz. 

Dr. Muñoz was the founding chair of the first Chicano Studies department in the United States in 1968 at the California State University at Los Angeles and the founding chair of the National Association of Chicana & Chicano Studies (NACCS). He is a pioneer in the creation of undergraduate and graduate curricula in the disciplines of Chicano/Latino & Ethnic Studies. An author of numerous groundbreaking works on the Mexican American political experience and on African American and Latino political coalitions, Dr. Muñoz has more than four decades experience of teaching in higher education and has gained international prominence as a political scientist, historian, journalist, and public intellectual.
