Senate President Therese Murray, former UMass Building Authority Director Katherine Craven, Professor Lester Cory to join Governor Patrick in being honored at Commencement ceremonies
UMass Dartmouth announced today that Massachusetts Senate President Therese Murray, former UMass Building Authority Executive Director Katherine Craven, and Professor Emeritus Lester Cory will receive the Chancellor's Medal at the University's upcoming 114th Commencement exercises.
"We are so pleased to honor these three individuals who have dedicated their intellect, talent and energy to improving the lives of individuals and communities in this region and far beyond," Chancellor Divina Grossman said. "Each is an inspirational example for the members of the Class of 2014."
The university announced recently that Governor Deval Patrick will be awarded the Chancellor's Medal at the University's School of Law Commencement Exercises on Monday, May 19 at 10 a.m. in the Main Auditorium on the main campus.
The Chancellor's Medal, awarded at the sole discretion of the Chancellor, recognizes individuals and organizations whose contributions to society represent the core values of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth -- lifelong learning, innovative research, and civic engagement.
Senate President Murray will be honored at that College of Arts and Sciences ceremony on Friday, May 16 at 2:30 p.m. Elected Senator of the Plymouth and Barnstable District in 1992, she became the first woman President of the Massachusetts Senate in March 2007. Throughout her career, she has been a driving force behind issues including child protection, welfare, health care, transportation, and job creation.
Katherine Craven will be honored at the College of Business ceremony on Friday, May 16 at 10 a.m. Recently named the Chief Administrative Officer at Babson College, she previously served as Executive Director of the UMass Building Authority and Assistant Vice President for Capital Finance for the University of Massachusetts, overseeing a $3.8 billion plan to modernize the five UMass campuses.
Professor Lester Cory will be honored on Saturday, May 17 at 10 a.m. during the Commencement for engineering, nursing, marine science and visual and performing arts graduates. As a member of the Electrical & Computer Engineering faculty, Dr. Cory started the SHARE program (The Society for Human Advancement Through Rehabilitation Engineering) which has helped more than 2,000 people use technology to overcome physical challenges.
The Friday and Saturday ceremonies will take place in the Vietnam Veterans Peace Memorial Amphitheater located next to the Claire T. Carney Library. In the case of rain, the ceremonies will take place in the Tripp Athletic Center. The School of Law ceremony will take place in the Main Auditorium, rain or shine.
UMass Dartmouth expects to announce its Honorary Degree recipients next week.
