Summit to Focus on Hunger in the Community
UMass Dartmouth's Leduc Center for Civic Engagement is hosting its 6th Annual Civic Engagement Summit, Thursday, April 17, 2014, 8:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m., at UMass Dartmouth's Woodland Commons. This year's focus is on the issue of hunger in the community and will include the participation of freshman, sophomores, and juniors from local high schools in New Bedford, Fall River, Dartmouth, Westport, Fairhaven, and Wareham. The Summit will include Keynote Speaker Carlos Ojeda Jr., student and teacher workshops, and a Stop Hunger Now packaging activity, in which 10,000 meals will be packaged for delivery to support schools and crisis relief programs.
Welcoming remarks will be offered by UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Divina Grossman, President of Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate Andrew Tarsy, and UMass Dartmouth student Jacob Miller '16, who will also serve as Master of Ceremonies.
Carlos Ojeda Jr., author of "The Power of Youth", serves as President & CEO of CoolSpeak, a leading youth engagement organization delivering key programs and events to keep students inspired, parents involved, and teachers engaged. The organization strives to provide inspiration ensuring that each and every student, parent, and teacher achieves their fullest potential. Mr. Ojeda Jr. will also present a teacher workshop engaging educational professionals as facilitators of youth engagement.
GenerationOn, a global youth service movement, will host a Student Workshop to engage youth participants in civic engagement and demonstrate the importance of youth service.
The Summit will also feature a Volunteer SouthCoast Presentation by students Aubrie Brault '15 and Melissa Wesember '16, followed by a presentation regarding the SouthCoast Serves 60-Hour Pledge by Jacob Miller.
