Black History Month 2014 Inaugural Event Scheduled for February 4, Share the Dream Banquet on February 8
The keynote address for UMass Dartmouth's Black History Month 2014 Inaugural Event will be offered by Dr. Eduardo Bonilla-Silva. His address, titled "Now You See it, Now You Don't! The Sweet Enchantment of Post-Racial Racism in Contemporary America", will take place February 4, at 11:00 a.m., at UMass Dartmouth's Claire T. Carney Library Grand Reading Room, with a reception to follow at the UMass Dartmouth Frederick Douglass Unity House.
Dr. Bonilla-Silva is Professor and Chair of the Sociology department at Duke University. He gained visibility in the social sciences with his 1997 American Sociological Review article, "Rethinking Racism: Toward a Structural Interpretation", in which he challenged social analysts to analyze racial matters from a structural perspective rather than from the sterile prejudice perspective. Welcome remarks will be offered by UMass Dartmouth Crime and Justice Studies Associate Professor Dr. Vivane Saleh-Hanna and UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Divina Grossman, who will introduce Professor Bonilla-Silva.
Also taking place during the first week in the month of remembrance honoring the unique and rich history of African-Americans in the United States, particularly on the SouthCoast, is the Share the Dream Banquet ($30 public admission), February 8, at 4:00 p.m., at Whites of Westport (66 State Road, Westport). The annual event is held to celebrate the success of UMass Dartmouth's College Now/START Program. This year the program is celebrating its 46th anniversary. The banquet recognizes freshman students that have completed the Fall Academic Program and are officially welcomed into the university.
