UMass Dartmouth's School for Marine Science & Technology Co-Organizes Conference for International Council for the Exploration of Seas
Provost Mohammad Karim Offers Welcoming Remarks at Annual Meeting
This year the annual meeting of the International Council for the Exploration of Seas (ICES) Working Group on Fishing Technology and Fish Behavior (FTFB) and Working Group on Fisheries Acoustics Science and Technology (FAST), and their joint session (JFTAB) takes place in New Bedford, May 5-9, 2014, hosted by NOAA Fisheries, Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, and UMass Dartmouth's School for Marin Science & Technology (SMAST).
Welcoming remarks were offered by UMass Dartmouth Provost Mohammad Karim at the New Bedford Whaling Museum today to more than one hundred attendees, whom represent organizations involved in marine sciences across the globe. Provost Karim highlighted the University's support for innovation in science and technology and its interests in building international collaborations.
"On behalf of Chancellor Divina Grossman of UMass Dartmouth, I want to welcome you all to this great gathering being co-hosted by SMAST. You will find SMAST to be the flagship School in fisheries research on the east coast known for its stellar researchers and robust research and academic programs," said Provost Karim. "I want to wish you all well in your conference and want to express serious desire on the part of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to seek/participate in international collaborations that may involve our faculty, students, that would bolster our research programs."
SMAST Professor Pingguo He was appointed to serve as Chair of the ICES FTFB earlier this year. ICES is a global organization, with a network of more than 4000 scientists, from almost 300 institutes. As an intergovernmental organization with twenty member countries across the North Atlantic, its main objective is to increase the scientific knowledge of the marine environment and its living resources and to use this knowledge to advance science and education for ocean sustainability.
ICES sciences are carried out by Expert Groups, covering all topics related to ocean and marine sciences. WGFTFB is the expert group that focuses on all measurements and observations pertaining to both scientific and commercial fishing gears, design and statistical methods and operations, and the behavior of fish in relation to fishing operations. WGFTFB provides advice to aquatic ecologists, biologists, and the fishery industry.
As chair of the working group, Professor He organizes annual meetings, composes annual reports, facilitates discussions among its membership of around 150 and other interested parties, and participates in ICES Annual Science Symposia and business meetings. The chair also assembles small groups in an ad hoc basis in response to requests from ICES or its member countries.
The focus at SMAST is on interdisciplinary basic-to-applied marine sciences and the development of related innovative technologies. In addition to the scholarly marine science and technology communities, the SMAST mission also emphasizes interaction with regional industry, and government and non-governmental agencies on compelling regional marine-related issues and technological development.
