First Amendment Attorney from Digital Rights Watchdog to Speak at UMass Law on NSA

University of Massachusetts School of Law at Dartmouth (UMass Law) will host David Greene, Senior Staff Attorney at Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), Monday, March 3, 2014 at 4:45 p.m., at the UMass Law Moot Courtroom. David Greene is an experienced First Amendment litigator who has worked in public interest advocacy and private practice for more than two decades. He will speak at UMass Law about EFF's litigation against the National Security Agency (NSA) and other developments in electronic free speech, privacy, innovation, and consumer rights law.

EFF, founded in 1990, confronts cutting-edge digital rights issues defending free speech, privacy, innovation, and consumer rights. The non-profit has been at the forefront of the issues surrounding the NSA and recent controversy related to its mass surveillance program and personal data breaches of millions of Americans by the agency.

In 2006, EFF filed the first case against a cooperating telecommunications carrier for violating its customers' privacy. The case was eventually dismissed following the passage of an amendment to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance (FISA) Act in 2008. In 2008, EFF sued the NSA to stop warrantless wiretapping, and in July 2013, a federal judge ruled that the government could not rely on state secrets privilege to block a constitutional challenge to the program. Following this ruling, EFF filed another lawsuit after a published FISA court order revealed an NSA demand to Verizon Communications to turn over data from customer phone records.
