"Layers of Learning" exhibition underway at UMass Dartmouth Campus Gallery

More than 70 works of students and UMass Dartmouth alumni on display through February 24

UMass Dartmouth's College of Visual & Performing Arts (CVPA) "Layers of Learning: Artist / Teacher/ Student" exhibition at the CVPA Campus Gallery showcases more than 70 works created by students currently enrolled in the Master of Art Education (MAE) Program along with MAE alumni and the Pre-K through 12th grade students they currently teach. The exhibition will be on display until February 24, 2015 with a closing reception and artist talk from 4-6 p.m. at the gallery.

The exhibition aims to celebrate the cyclical nature of art education as participants shift from artist, teacher, and student throughout their careers. This exhibition endeavors to explore the variety of stages our students experience throughout their career as well as to highlight their professional achievements and celebrate the work they are doing in their classrooms. Painting, photography, mixed media, drawing, digital art, and sculpture are works featured by participating artists.

Current MAE students and alumni participants include Corine Adams, Morgan Bozarth, Kelly Burdge, Linda Dempsey, Elizabeth Dooher, Jamie Lynch, Claire Munley, Christine Neville, Deb Nicolosi, Lindsay Nygaard, Russ Orcutt, Amanda Fay Russell, Greg Sampl, Lauren Savoia, Valerie Schomburg, Aaron Souza, and HoYin Yuen.

Student participants come from the following Pre-K through 12th Grade schools:

Attleboro High School
Barnstable Intermediate School
Bishop Connolly High School
Bristol-Plymouth High School
Falmouth High School
Fairhaven High School
Leroy L. Wood Elementary School
Middleborough High School
Nativity Preparatory School
Renaissance Community School for the Arts
Westport High School
West Village Elementary School

UMass Dartmouth's Art Education Program challenges students to be critical thinkers, while developing visual, verbal and written skills, which serve them professionally and personally as discerning individuals living in a community with others. The MAE program is dedicated to increasing the capacity of its graduates to question issues related to teaching, thinking, learning, and producing in and through the visual arts. This program offers a sequence of practical, theoretical, and studio-based experiences through which students build on their knowledge, skills, and confidence as art educators. The MAE program is approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to offer initial and professional licensure. The program emphasizes professional development and lifelong learning for teachers who already hold teaching licenses in the arts or related fields.

The CVPA Campus Gallery is located on the first floor of the CVPA building at UMass Dartmouth. Visitors are advised to use parking lot 7. All events are free and open to the public. Gallery hours: Monday through Thursday 10 am - 4 pm, Friday 10 am - noon.
