News 2016: Vachon publishes article on big companies in small towns

Professor Vachon analyzes Market Basket events of summer 2014 and describes importance of effective management when big business comes to small towns

In a new article, Professor C.J. Vachon analyzed the Market Basket events of summer 2014 and described importance of effective management when big business comes to small towns.  Vachon was invited by the Mitchell Hamline Law Review to write an article relevant to practicing business law in rural or small towns.  She wrote about how small towns and their business lawyers should prepare for a big companies to move in.  The article examined the situation through the lens of corporate governance, paying particular attention to the other stakeholders: employees, customers, and the community.  Vachon pulled into the analysis the events on the east coast in the summer of 2014 surrounding the Demoulas family and internal governance issues at Market Basket stores.  In this situation, the employees (non-unionized) walked off their jobs, the customers stopped shopping, and the rest of the community became entangled in controversy.  Vachon's article considered these other stakeholders as powerful players when big companies comes to small towns.  The article is available on SSRN.
