UMass Dartmouth professors Arghavan Louhghalam and Mazdak Tootkaboni from the Department of Civil Engineering in the College of Engineering will be part of a team of four civil engineering professors who will co-chair the 2018 conference of the Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

EMI 2018 will be held May 29 - June 1, 2018 at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts and will be chaired by:

  • Arghavan Louhghalam, Civil & Environmental Engineering, UMass Dartmouth
  • Roland Pellenq, UMI, CSHub@MIT, MIT
  • Mazdak Tootkaboni, Civil & Environmental Engineering, UMass Dartmouth
  • Franz-Josef Ulm, Civil & Environmental Engineering, MIT

Bringing together prominent researchers in engineering mechanics

EMI and its annual conference bring together researchers in all areas of theoretical and applied mechanics, mechanics of solids and fluids, including but not limited to: continuum mechanics; dynamics; stability; properties of materials; computational, probabilistic and experimental mechanics; biomechanics; and nano- and micro-mechanics.

The conference is expected to attract approximately 800 participants and will include 6 keynotes by some of the most prominent researchers in the area of engineering mechanics, more than 70 breakout sessions with more than 400 parallel sessions, student poster and paper competitions, a reception, and a banquet.

Past venues for the conference include Stanford University (EMI 2015), University of Vanderbilt (EMI 2016) and University of California San Diego (EMI 2017).

The call for mini-symposia proposals is now open: Mini-Symposium Proposal Submission for EMI2018
