PBS’s NOVA Next profiles video survey that may help manage cod fishery

Live video camera designed by scientists at UMass Dartmouth may present a more accurate count of Atlantic cod fishery

Dr. Kevin Stokesbury, Professor of Fisheries Oceanography at UMass Dartmouth's School for Marine Science & Technology

A ground fish video survey system collaboratively developed by Professor Kevin Stokesbury at UMass Dartmouth’s School for Marine Science & Technology, graduate students, and fishermen may provide real-time visual information as well as more accurate measurements of the Atlantic cod population.

Stokesbury and his research team – including graduate students Travis Lowery and Nick Calabrese – designed the system so they could identify the species in every image and help regulators manage the fishery.

PBS's NOVA Next recently featured the team’s latest work using the ground fish survey system. Learn more.
