Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Shaun Spencer presented on consumer privacy legislation at Ohio State University’s Center for Ethics and Human Values. The presentation, “Consumer Privacy In the Age of Big Data: Rewriting the Rules,” was part of the center’s COMPAS Conference: Targeting with Big Data.

Associate Dean Spencer described the evolving uses of consumer data over the last two decades as well as the law’s failure to keep pace with that evolution. He then described how newly enacted privacy laws in Europe and California have set the stage for Congress to pass the first comprehensive federal consumer privacy legislation. Finally, he described the various forms that such legislation could take, and offered predictions on what form Congress was most likely to adopt.

The COMPAS conference brought together experts from a range of disciplines including law, philosophy, data science, sociology, communications, political science, and journalism. The conference was the last of four COMPAS conferences investigating how our lives have been changed by technology. Presenters included faculty from the University of Massachusetts, University of Virginia, University of Wisconsin, Penn State University, and Ohio State University.
