Black History 4 Seasons programming begins January 15

UMass Dartmouth's Black History 4 Seasons Council announces events for 2017.

The Black History 4 Seasons Council will kick-off the 2017 academic year with a variety of engaging activities during the spring semester.

In collaboration with various UMassD colleges and departments and community partners such as the New Bedford Historical Society, these celebratory events aim to engage students and the broader community in deeper conversations and foster ongoing dialogue about the unique experiences of Black Americans.

Upcoming events: 

  • January 15 – Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Community Program, featuring Toyan Harper as well as performances by the New Bedford High School Chorus, Deliverance Gospel Chair, and Dori Leggae. The event takes place 4:00-5:30 pm, at Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 635 Purchase Street, New Bedford.
  • January 27 – CORE Ensemble presents “Of Ebony Embers: Vignettes of the Harlem Renaissance,” celebrating the lives of African American poets Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, and Claude McKay.
  • February 3 –15th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast, featuring keynote speaker Donovan Livingston, an award-winning educator, spoken word poet, and public speaker.
  • February 9 – Our History: New Bedford and the Underground Railroad presentation and discussion.
  • February 12 – 17th Annual Frederick Douglass Read-a-thon, highlighting excerpts from Narratives of the life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave written by Himself  (1845).
  • February 16 – 28th National African American Read-In, celebrating the creative works of literature by African American authors.
